        Who we are

Ken Reich started Specialty Auto in 1981 as a race oriented performance auto shop.  This page shows just a few of the more memorable events that have happened over the years.  Please click on any of the pictures to see a larger version.

In the early 80's, Ken drove a 1967 Chevy II with a 286 CI Chevy engine with a single 750 CFM carb, making 600HP, which was always a crowd pleaser, due in part to monster wheelstands like the one shown here.

In 1984, he was the National record holder in C/SM comp eliminator at 9.69 ET @ 139.40 MPH, set at Baylands raceway in Freemont CA. He raced for many years in the N.H.R.A. competition eliminator category, which took him all over the mid & western U.S. and Canada.  He a total of 19 Wally's, 2 division 6 titles, 1 class win at the Winternationals and 16 W.W.C.S. wins. Ken met many interesting people over the years such as Alan Patterson of Patterson racing.

From 1986 - 1988 Ken raced the C econo dragster which had a 291 CI Pontiac motor making 612 HP @ 10,400 RPM.  He says he never really liked the dragster class, and always felt more comfortable in a door slammer.  This car did 7.78 ET @ 171 MPH at Mission Raceway in Mission B.C.

In 1986 Ken purchased a chassis from East Texas Race Cars, completed the car and raced from 1987 to 1996.  This is the car that he won the championships with.  He set a total of 14 national records, and won 19 points meets.  This car was raced in both B super modified and C super modified classes. B super modified class it used a 316 CI motor with a single 4 BBL carb making 768 HP @ 9200 RPM.

It was capable of running 8.60 @ 159 MPH.  In C super modified, it had a 286 CI motor making 680 HP @ 9300 RPM.  Car was capable of running 8.90 @154 MPH.  The transmission was a clutchless liberty 5 speed. Car weight was 3000 lbs

Snowmobiles were a winter pastime until 1989, when things really got going.  Kens sleds were getting bigger and better, lighter and faster.  With the same drive and determination that brought him success on the race track, Ken started building sleds that were being noticed by fellow enthusiasts.  Soon, Specialty was engaged full time building and servicing sleds, and developing new products. In 1999 Ken ran his drag sled with a 1500 CC Crankshop engine making 291 HP @ 8700 RPM, and ran 9.12 @ 149 MPH.  Always a good MPH machine, but never could hook the sled up.  He always had to fight for traction, because of marginal track conditions.

Ken has retired from drag racing (at least for now), and has been spending his time in the summer autocrossing and road racing with his newest toy, a 2004 WRX STI.  Pushing 300 hp and having all wheel drive is quite a blast.
